Sum Boriboun is New Zealand’s first Laos visual artist

Working with acrylic paint with metallic accents and clay sculpture, Sum is bringing to life vivid scenes of family stories and childhood memories through bold, striking colors and forms of the people in his life.

The scenes are a mix of the unfamiliar (Dad Fishing with Grenade!) and relationships familiar to anyone with a family. The first Laos Kiwi visual artist, born in a reeducation camp in Laos, and moving to New Zealand as a child, Sum proves that art has no limits—only deeper ways to be felt.

Every detail ignites emotion, nostalgia, and cultural identity, transforming personal history into visual storytelling.
